Ghana–Korea Fugu Trade Gains Ground as Ambassador Pushes Bongo Export Model

The model supports women-led production in Bongo while linking trade growth with planned investments in local healthcare infrastructure.

Ghana’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Kojo Choi, is championing a growing cross-border trade link between Ghana and South Korea, anchored in the export of traditional fugu garments from northern Ghana to the Korean market, as part of efforts to position cultural industries within the country’s export diversification strategy.

The initiative, facilitated by Friends of Hope (KFHI), has enabled women in Bongo to scale production and access overseas demand, creating a niche value chain described as a “real story of connection” that is converting local craftsmanship into a commercial opportunity. The model highlights the role of community-based enterprises in expanding Ghana’s non-traditional exports while supporting rural livelihoods.

KFHI’s engagement in Ghana spans more than a decade, with interventions covering “education and entrepreneurship” in Bolgatanga, “water resource development” and “climate resilience” in Tamale, and vocational training programmes targeted at women in Bongo. The fugu export initiative has emerged as one of the more commercially relevant outcomes of this partnership.

Building on this foundation, discussions between Ambassador Choi and KFHI President Charles Choi have advanced plans for a “maternal and child health & nutrition improvement” project in Bongo. The proposal involves the construction and operation of a dedicated healthcare facility adjacent to the Bongo District Hospital, aimed at improving access to essential services for pregnant women and infants. Construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, with completion targeted for late 2027.

Officials describe the project as part of a “genuine partnership” framework that integrates economic empowerment with social infrastructure delivery. The selection of Bongo as the “first project” site is intended to establish a proof of concept, with authorities indicating plans to “scale this model” nationwide following successful implementation.
