Ghana is stepping up efforts to train solar technicians as government seeks to build the skilled workforce needed to expand renewable energy adoption, with Germany providing technical support through a climate-protection programme.
A technical committee workshop in Accra brought together officials from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the Energy Commission of Ghana, the Commission for TVET Ghana, the Ghana TVET Service and 12 technical and vocational institutions involved in solar technology training.
The workshop reviewed progress on a competency-based training programme for solar technicians and sought to align technical education more closely with the skills required by Ghana’s emerging renewable energy sector.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Ing. Seth Mahu, Director for Renewables and Green Transition at the ministry, stressed the need to build a critical mass of skilled workers capable of supporting the government’s renewable energy objectives.
The participating TVET institutions developed individual roadmaps during the workshop to strengthen their solar training programmes and better integrate them into Ghana’s wider energy transition plans.
The discussions also advanced plans for a net-metering training unit, which would equip students with skills extending beyond the installation of meters and help prepare technicians to support the wider deployment of renewable energy systems.
The training initiative is being supported by Germany through the Sustainable Energy for Climate Protection II (SE4C II) project, commissioned by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by GIZ in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
The programme reflects Germany’s continued support for Ghana’s technical and vocational education system as the country seeks to develop the workforce required for its clean-energy ambitions.
The focus on skills comes as the renewable energy transition creates demand not only for solar equipment and investment but also for technicians capable of installing, operating and maintaining the systems.
The initiative therefore links Ghana’s energy-transition agenda with efforts to strengthen technical education, potentially giving TVET graduates a pathway into a growing renewable energy market while helping address the skills requirements of the sector.
