On Tuesday, February 24, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement acknowledging numerous public complaints regarding the treatment of Ghanaian visa applicants.
The concerns raised highlight systemic issues in the visa application process, including inadequate waiting areas, lack of emergency services, extended appointment wait times, and challenges navigating complex visa application websites.
Citizens have voiced frustration over several recurring issues during the visa application process. Many embassies lack proper waiting areas, forcing applicants to wait in uncomfortable or outdoor settings, sometimes for hours, the absence of emergency medical services at some visa centers raises safety concerns, particularly for elderly or vulnerable applicants, applicants often face long waiting times to secure appointments, leading to missed opportunities and travel disruptions, and difficulty-to-navigate online portals have compounded the stress of the application process, especially for individuals less familiar with digital systems.

In response to these concerns, the Ministry has formally engaged with foreign missions, urging them to implement more humane and efficient procedures.
“The Ministry would take steps to ensure that the embassies and high commissions comply with the directives stated in the Note Verbale,” the statement emphasized.

The Ministry’s call to action aims to promote respectful treatment and improved service delivery for all Ghanaian visa applicants. By addressing these systemic challenges, the Ministry hopes to foster a smoother and more dignified visa application experience.
This intervention is not only a step toward safeguarding the rights of Ghanaian citizens but also a crucial move to strengthen diplomatic ties and economic partnerships. Improved visa application experiences could facilitate greater business travel, international collaboration, and tourism, all of which contribute positively to Ghana’s economic landscape.
Foreign embassies that respond proactively to these directives may also enhance their diplomatic standing and foster goodwill among Ghanaians, further deepening bilateral relationships.
