The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has pledged stronger regional collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) after the agency committed $275,000 to adolescent health programmes across selected districts in the region.
The assurance followed a courtesy call by a UNFPA delegation led by Mr. Vitus Atanga at the Regional Coordinating Council in Ho. The visit formed part of ongoing engagements to strengthen delivery of reproductive and adolescent health services.

UNFPA has been supporting seven districts in the Volta Region with interventions in reproductive health, family planning and logistics, contributing to improvements in healthcare access over the years. The new investment is targeted at enhancing the capacity of health service providers and rolling out additional programmes focused on adolescents, a group the agency considers central to long-term social and economic development.
Gunu commended the sustained partnership and said the Regional Coordinating Council would work closely with UNFPA to ensure the interventions are implemented effectively and achieve measurable outcomes. He emphasised that active monitoring and assessment would remain a priority to ensure communities derive full benefit.

He further encouraged the agency to broaden its support to cover all districts, describing the region’s health needs as diverse and expansive. Gunu added that he is committed to promoting stronger inter-regional collaboration to advance public health, noting that partnerships such as these provide an essential foundation for improving wellbeing across the country.
The meeting reinforced UNFPA’s continued engagement in the Volta Region at a time when district-level health systems are under pressure to respond to rising demand for adolescent-friendly services.
