A coalition of 15 financial services companies in Ghana is partnering with the Private and Financial Sector (PFS) Programme to develop innovative financial solutions for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). This initiative is funded by the German government through the GIZ organization.
The project aims to tailor financial assistance to meet the specific needs of these smaller businesses. During a meeting in Accra, representatives from insurance, pension, banks, and experts discussed strategies to enhance access to financial services for SMEs.
The collaboration plans to introduce various forms of financial assistance, including loans, savings, investments, and bundled products. The focus is particularly on businesses owned or managed by women, young people, and individuals with disabilities.
Angela Armah from GIZ highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “GIZ is excited to support this effort because small and medium-sized businesses are crucial for job creation. They are like small seeds that can grow into large companies and significantly boost the country’s economy. Our goal is to provide the right kind of financial support to these businesses.”
SMEs, which employ about 85% of Ghana’s workforce, often struggle to secure the necessary funding for growth. Additionally, many of these businesses are not fully aware of the various financial services available to them.
This project aims to create financial solutions specifically designed for SMEs, enabling them to access the capital they need, expand, and generate more jobs. GIZ is committed to working with the 15 financial companies and 15 Trade Associations to develop financial assistance that meets the needs of these smaller businesses.
This initiative underscores GIZ’s dedication to fostering economic growth in Ghana by supporting its small and medium-sized enterprises.
