FarmYield Africa and German development agency GIZ have launched a project targeting more than 200 women and young people in Northern Ghana, combining agricultural production, mechanisation training and business support to expand economic opportunities in the sector.
The Advancing Growth, Resilience, and Opportunity with Women & Youth (AGROWY) project aims to equip participants with practical farming skills, improve market access and help farmers formalise and strengthen their businesses by 2028, the organisations said following the signing of a memorandum of understanding.
The project has three main components. Training 40 women in tractor operation and agricultural mechanisation, supporting 60 young people to engage in farming, and helping more than 100 farmers improve their businesses through training and market participation.
The initiative comes as agricultural mechanisation and access to markets remain important to efforts to improve farm productivity and create viable livelihoods. Training women to operate tractors could also widen their participation in mechanised farming services, although the project announcement does not specify whether participants will receive equipment, financing or support to establish their own businesses.
Rashid Imoro, district director of agriculture for Nandan, said the programme would equip women with practical skills and create livelihood opportunities to support their economic independence and families.
AGROWY is part of the Private Sector and Innovation Promotion in Ghana (PSInno) programme, commissioned by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by GIZ in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry.
The project’s economic impact will depend on whether participants can translate training into sustained production, stronger businesses and reliable access to buyers. By linking skills development with farming and business support, AGROWY aims to strengthen the participation of women and young people in Northern Ghana’s agricultural economy.
