Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine has unveiled startling allegations of corruption within the National Service Scheme (NSS), claiming that former Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Osei Assibey Antwi, allegedly bribed a Member of Parliament to silence media coverage surrounding the recently exposed ghost names scandal. Investigations carried out by the Office of the Attorney General in collaboration with the ORAL team reportedly uncovered significant evidence pointing to deep-seated malfeasance within the scheme.
During a press briefing on Monday, Dr. Ayine revealed that investigations conducted by the Office of the Attorney General in partnership with the ORAL team had unearthed substantial evidence of corruption within the scheme.
“With the National Service scandal, eight suspects have been interrogated, and a good number of them have started ‘singing,’” he stated. “We now have evidence of payments made into the accounts of top executives of the National Service Scheme by private vendors.”
Dr. Ayine further explained that evidence indicates that in November 2024, senior NSS officials, including its former CEO, arranged payments to a sitting Ghanaian MP to stifle media scrutiny and to offer public defense for the implicated officials.
Additionally, the Attorney General noted that investigations into both the NSS corruption case and the contentious Sky Train scandal are anticipated to wrap up by mid-April, which could lead to prosecutions.
These revelations intensify existing concerns regarding financial mismanagement in public institutions at a time when Ghana is working to enhance governance and transparency.
