Ghanaian actor Clement Bonney, popularly known as ‘Mr. Beautiful’ has blamed the government for contributing to the rising divorce rates in Ghana, citing economic mismanagement under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.
He argues that the harsh economic conditions have strained many households, leading to an unprecedented number of marriages ending in divorce.
According to Bonney, the inability of husbands to provide for their families is a direct consequence of the current government’s handling of the economy.
“If a man can no longer support his wife financially, how can the marriage survive?” Bonney asked in a conversation with TV3’s Johnnie Hughes.
He shared anecdotes from interactions with Ghanaians, particularly those in the informal sector, who have witnessed firsthand the economic struggles leading to marital breakdowns.
This perspective highlights a significant economic ripple effect—domestic instability stemming from rising inflation, unemployment, and the cost of living. For businesses, especially those in the family counselling, legal, and support services sectors, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity.
The surge in divorces could lead to increased demand for divorce lawyers, marriage counsellors, and even rental housing as displaced spouses seek new accommodations.
Additionally, industries focused on providing financial literacy, savings solutions, and marital support could see an uptick in clientele seeking ways to stabilize their households.
While Bonney’s view may not represent the full spectrum of causes for marital dissolution, it underscores the far-reaching effects of economic policies on family structures, which in turn affect consumer spending and social dynamics within the country.
