A surgeon at the Akosombo Hospital, in the Eastern region, Dr. Arhinful, has emphasized the importance of annual mammograms for women aged 40 and above as a critical step in the early detection of breast cancer.
With October designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Arhinful who was speaking in an interview with the High Street Journal, encouraged women to take advantage of the free or discounted mammogram services offered by many organizations during this period.
Breast cancer continues to be a major health concern, and early detection is key to effective treatment and better survival rates. “A yearly mammogram can catch abnormalities early, greatly improving the chances of successful treatment,” Dr. Arhinful said, urging women to prioritize their breast health this month.
Healthcare facilities nationwide participate in various initiatives throughout October, making breast cancer screenings more accessible. These programs aim to eliminate barriers to care and encourage women to take proactive steps for their health.

Dr. Arhinful also noted that alongside the screenings, many organizations offer educational sessions to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention and available treatment options.
During the interview, Dr. Arhinful also addressed the disparities in breast cancer care, particularly in underserved communities. He highlighted the importance of awareness campaigns in reducing these gaps and ensuring more women have access to essential healthcare services. “It’s not just about spreading awareness but ensuring that women have the means to take proactive measures for their health,” he explained.

Additionally, Dr. Arhinful dispelled common fears surrounding mammograms, acknowledging that while there might be mild discomfort during the procedure, the benefits of early detection far outweigh any temporary unease. “Educating women about what to expect can help ease their concerns and encourage more to get screened,” he noted.
