Ghanaians living in mining communities are set to benefit from a transformative partnership between the Minerals Development Fund (MDF) and Chinese textile giant Hunan Isunte (Yixintai) Group, promising over 10,000 alternative livelihood opportunities in a bold effort to diversify local economies and promote sustainable development.
The deal, titled “Health Ramie Agriculture-Industry-Technology-Commerce Integrated Industrial Chain Project in Ghana”, was signed at the Fourth China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo in Changsha, Hunan Province.
At the helm of this initiative is Dr. Hanna Louisa Bisiw-Kotei, Administrator of the MDF, who played a pivotal role in sealing the agreement with the Hunan-based textile leader.
“This isn’t just an investment in agriculture; it’s an investment in people, we are fulfilling the MDF’s core mandate by creating sustainable, alternative livelihood opportunities for Ghanaians in mining communities who have long been economically vulnerable.” Dr. Bisiw-Kotei remarked.
Hunan Isunte (Yixintai) Group is a renowned Chinese manufacturer and exporter of high-quality ramie and linen textiles. The company specializes in ultra-thin ramie fabrics part of the natural fiber family that includes hemp and linen praised for their silk-like luster and suitability for high-end women’s fashion. Hunan Isunte (Yixintai) Group, whose collaboration was key to this venture, leads one of China’s foremost producers of eco-friendly textiles.

The project will introduce large-scale cultivation and processing of the Ramie plant in Ghana. Native to Asia, ramie is a hardy, fast-growing plant with immense commercial value in the textile industry. Its integration into Ghana’s agriculture sector is expected to offer a resilient, environmentally friendly alternative for communities heavily dependent on extractive activities.
By investing in a full value chain from cultivation to processing and export this initiative will not only create thousands of jobs but also stimulate local economies, promote agro-industrial development, and contribute to the country’s non-traditional export earnings.
In line with MDF’s mandate to use mining revenues to support community development and resilience, this partnership marks a strategic shift toward inclusive economic empowerment.
Dr. Bisiw-Kotei emphasized that this deal was a best bet for the country’s shift from extractive to inclusive, with innovation, investment, and international cooperation, her outfit can transform lives in Ghana’s mining communities for generations to come.
