The Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has been granted GH¢10 million bail with two sureties without justification following his arraignment before an Accra High Court.
The court granted the bail on Saturday, October 3, 2026, after the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) brought the MP before the court in connection with its ongoing investigation into alleged financial offences involving SIC Savings and Loans.
Mr Baffour Awuah pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him, including conspiracy to commit intentional dissipation of funds, intentionally causing financial loss to the State and money laundering.
His arraignment follows his voluntary surrender to EOCO on October 1, after the High Court had earlier issued a warrant for his arrest.
From arrest warrant to court
This development marks another chapter in a matter that began with EOCO’s efforts to secure the MP’s attendance for questioning.
EOCO had previously obtained a warrant from the High Court authorising his arrest after telling the court that efforts to secure his voluntary attendance had been unsuccessful.
The Office also obtained authority to search for and seize documents considered relevant to its investigation.
The warrant followed a confrontation at the Accra High Court on September 23, when EOCO officers attempted to arrest the MP.
Mr Baffour Awuah subsequently surrendered himself to EOCO on October 1.
In a statement issued after his surrender, EOCO said he voluntarily appeared at its premises at approximately 10:00 a.m. and was subsequently placed under arrest after the relevant investigative and operational procedures were commenced.
The Office said he was cooperating with investigators.
EOCO races against constitutional timelines
EOCO had indicated on October 2 that it was working with the Office of the Attorney-General to bring the MP before a weekend court.
The Office said it was mindful of the constitutional timelines and procedural requirements governing bail.
That process culminated in Saturday’s court appearance and the granting of bail.
What is being investigated?
EOCO’s investigation centres on alleged financial transactions involving SIC Savings and Loans Company Limited.
The Office has previously said the investigation relates to allegations including financial loss, dissipation of public funds and money laundering. The Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem-Sai, also previously confirmed that the investigation included allegations of unauthorised financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans.
What happens next?
With bail granted and a plea of not guilty entered, the case now moves into the next stage of the criminal process.
The allegations against Mr Baffour Awuah remain unproven, and the prosecution will be required to establish its case through evidence before the court.
The latest developments therefore mark a significant progression in the case: the arrest warrant has been executed, the MP has been arraigned, he has pleaded not guilty, and the court has granted him bail.
The investigation into the alleged financial transactions involving SIC Savings and Loans, however, remains ongoing.
