Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced plans to streamline the company by cutting management layers and requiring employees to return to the office five days a week starting January 2025. In a memo to staff, Jassy criticized the growing bureaucracy within the company, citing unnecessary meetings and decision-making delays. To improve efficiency, Amazon aims to increase the ratio of individual contributors to managers by 15% by March 2025 and has introduced a tipline for employees to report bureaucratic obstacles. The new return-to-office policy will allow exceptions for certain cases, but Jassy acknowledged that some employees may need time to adjust. This move is expected to boost foot traffic in cities where Amazon has a significant presence, including Seattle, Arlington, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Jassy emphasized the need to operate like a startup, prioritizing innovation, urgency, collaboration, and fast decision-making. While most of Amazon’s 1.5 million employees work in non-office roles, the return-to-office mandate targets the company’s 350,000 office workers, some of whom had previously resisted the change. Jassy concluded by stressing the importance of actively maintaining the company’s culture.
