Ghanaian music group Alabaster Box has initiated legal steps against rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, accusing him of copyright infringement related to their hit song “Akwaaba.”
In a formal notice served through their legal representatives, Sustineri Attorneys, the group alleges that Medikal unlawfully sampled portions of “Akwaaba” in his recently released track, “Welcome to Africa,” without seeking authorization. They contend that the opening seconds of Medikal’s song bear a “significant resemblance” to their copyrighted composition, thereby creating a derivative work in violation of their exclusive rights.
Alabaster Box argues that Medikal’s familiarity with their music catalog points to deliberate infringement. “Welcome to Africa” has been actively promoted across digital and traditional media platforms, including Medikal’s verified YouTube channel, where it has amassed more than 72,000 views, according to the group’s statement.
In their notice, Alabaster Box asserts that this promotion unfairly capitalizes on their intellectual property for economic benefit. They are demanding the immediate removal of the song from all platforms, the cessation of any further public performances and marketing efforts, and the disclosure of all agreements and financial accounts associated with the track. The group warns that failure to comply could result in a lawsuit seeking injunctive relief and claims for damages.
“Alabaster Box remains committed to safeguarding its creative rights and protecting the long-established reputation it has built within the music industry,” the group said in the notice.
