The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has announced the launch of the 2025 Digital Innovation Challenge in Trade. This initiative is designed to empower young African innovators by enabling them to create digital solutions that dismantle cross-border trade obstacles faced by MSMEs. The goal is to find transformative, scalable, and inventive digital solutions that can boost intra-African commerce and open up new opportunities within the AfCFTA framework.
The challenge is open to young African innovators, specifically entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35, as well as diverse teams which may include individuals, teams, startups, or enterprises that have developed a digital solution addressing cross-border trade issues for MSMEs. Projects at any stage of development are welcome, ranging from early ideas and prototypes to operational solutions that are already scaling.
Applicants are encouraged to propose digital solutions that support MSMEs in several key areas. One area focuses on market intelligence and e-commerce platforms, where solutions such as B2B or B2C platforms, trade data systems, and market insight providers could play a pivotal role. Another area is e-commerce and logistics, where innovations might address warehousing, last-mile delivery, or the digital aggregation of goods and services. There is also a need for solutions in cross-border professional services, which include digital tools designed to facilitate the delivery of professional services across African borders.
In addition, digital financial services are a priority, with fintech solutions that enhance payments, investments, insurance, or trade finance being highly relevant. Trade and investment facilitation is another critical category, emphasizing tools aimed at simplifying trade procedures, formalities, and regulatory compliance. Finally, solutions that offer entrepreneurial skills development are welcomed; these might involve platforms that provide digital training, capacity-building, or mentorship to MSMEs.
The challenge represents a significant opportunity for innovators to contribute to the modernization of trade within Africa by addressing some of the most pressing challenges faced by MSMEs.
