As Ghana’s hospitality sector accelerates its expansion, the upcoming Hampton by Hilton Accra Airport is stepping forward as a model for resource-efficient real estate development.
Developed by PLP Properties Ltd. in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the project embeds rigorous eco-friendly standards directly into its architectural design and structural construction.
According to officials, the 170-bed mid-scale hotel is officially targeting EDGE Advanced certification, which is the green building standard established by IFC.

To achieve this benchmark, the facility is engineered to deliver significant resource efficiencies compared to conventional hotel infrastructure.
The construction is estimated to achieve at least a 40 percent reduction in energy consumption during operations. Moreover, it is also expected to achieve at least 20 percent savings in water usage.
There is a deliberate effort to achieve substantial reductions in embodied carbon within construction materials. These efficiency measures are designed not only to minimize environmental impact but also to deliver long-term commercial benefits by significantly lowering ongoing operating costs.
“The project is targeting EDGE Advanced certification, IFC’s green building standard. The hotel is being designed to use at least 40 percent less energy and 20 percent less water than a conventional building, while also reducing embodied carbon in construction materials. These efficiencies are expected to lower operating costs and establish a stronger benchmark for resource-efficient development in Ghana’s hospitality sector,” a joint statement by IFC and PLP Properties indicated.

In doing so, the project establishes a higher baseline for resource efficiency across Ghana’s commercial real estate landscape
“Investment in quality, sustainable accommodation can strengthen Ghana’s tourism sector,” stated Nathalie Kouassi Akon, IFC Division Director for West Africa Gulf of Guinea, emphasizing that the project will “promote more sustainable hotel development.”
Jean-Louis Feghali, Executive Director of PLP Properties Ltd., emphasized the value of international guidance in reaching these green goals.
“We value IFC’s support in helping us deliver the project in line with international sustainability standards,” he noted.
Through long-term financing structured to support full construction and operational launch, IFC and PLP Properties are demonstrating how capital investment can advance sustainable growth and environmental stewardship in emerging markets.
