The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has outlined major collaborative initiatives with Ghana, centred on climate resilience, health system strengthening, and inclusive economic development, as the agency marks 10 years of operations in the country.
These priorities emerged during a meeting between the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, and UNOPS Deputy Chief Executive Director, Sonja Leighton-Kone in Accra.
Ms. Leighton-Kone noted ongoing joint efforts in several strategic areas, stressing climate-resilient infrastructure, health systems improvement, sustainable procurement and institutional capacity building as core pillars of the partnership. She disclosed that UNOPS is supporting Ghana to develop a national roadmap for resilient infrastructure aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change.
Additionally, the agency is providing essential medical and non-medical equipment to the Ghana Health Service to bolster nationwide healthcare delivery.
Beyond climate and health, Ms. Leighton-Kone underscored UNOPS’ work in promoting inclusive economic growth. She said the agency is implementing programmes tailored to empower women-led, youth-led, and disability-owned micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises ( MSMEs), helping them gain access to opportunities that enhance productivity and competitiveness.
She further noted UNOPS’ interest in expanding cooperation into digital transformation, climate finance mobilisation and the development of bankable infrastructure projects capable of attracting sustainable investment. These areas, she said, reflect global development trends and align with Ghana’s long-term growth ambitions.
Deputy Minister Quayson welcomed the ongoing initiatives and stressed that they support the government’s broader development agenda. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening cooperation with UNOPS to advance national priorities across infrastructure, economic empowerment and institutional strengthening.
Both sides positioned the partnership as a driver of resilient, inclusive and sustainable development.
