The University of Ghana has successfully resolved its longstanding contractual dispute with Mulch Company Limited (formerly Pine Springs Company Limited) regarding the management of the Legon Botanical Gardens, as it plans to takeover the management of the place. Following a legal process that upheld the University’s stance, the company is set to cease operations and vacate the Gardens by November 30, 2024, restoring full control to the University.
The dispute, which stemmed from Mulch Company Limited’s failure to meet its contractual obligations under a 2009 agreement for the renovation and management of the Gardens, ended in the University’s favour after extensive negotiations and court proceedings. The University of Ghana now plans to take charge of restoring the Gardens, preserving them as a critical green space for learning, research, and recreation.

In the original agreement, the University partnered with Pine Springs Company Limited to enhance the Botanical Gardens, a landmark aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainability. However, over the years, the company, now operating as Mulch Company Limited, consistently failed to honour its commitments, prompting the University to pursue legal action.
The University of Ghana remains dedicated to safeguarding the Gardens, which have long served as a tranquil, educational environment. University officials have reassured the public that the Gardens will soon undergo necessary renovations to ensure they are fit for their intended purpose and will be reopened for public use after this process is completed.

As part of its renewed vision, the University plans to enhance the Botanical Gardens as a hub for scientific research, contributing to its academic mission of environmental stewardship. This renewed effort also aligns with the University’s broader goals of fostering sustainability and creating an eco-friendly campus.
The public is encouraged to remain patient as the University carries out this transition. The newly restored Gardens will not only continue to be a source of natural beauty but will also offer educational programs and recreational activities that further the University’s goal of promoting environmental awareness among the wider community.
