Ghana’s higher education system may need to rethink how it introduces students to research, innovation and problem-solving if it seeks to produce graduates capable of creating businesses, solving community challenges and contributing meaningfully to economic growth.
Currently, many university students encounter structured research work mainly in their final year, when they are required to complete a dissertation or project before graduation. However, education experts and industry observers argue that developing research and problem-solving abilities should begin much earlier in a student’s academic journey and become a continuous part of learning.
Rather than treating research as a final-year requirement, universities could adopt a lifelong learning approach where students are regularly exposed to identifying problems, analysing data, designing solutions and testing ideas from the early stages of their programmes.
Research on problem-based learning (PBL) has shown that exposing students to real-world challenges can strengthen entrepreneurial abilities, employability skills and their capacity to develop practical solutions. A study on undergraduate entrepreneurial development through problem-based learning found that cross-disciplinary student groups were able to research problems and develop innovative solutions for small businesses.

For Ghanaian universities, this approach could provide a pathway to address graduate unemployment by shifting the focus from producing job seekers alone to developing innovators, entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs; employees who demonstrate entrepreneurial thinking within existing organisations by creating new ideas, improving processes and identifying growth opportunities.
One model worth examining is the interdisciplinary approach adopted at institutions such as the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where students are encouraged to combine knowledge from different academic fields to address complex challenges. UBC’s interdisciplinary programmes emphasise collaboration across disciplines, allowing students to work with diverse perspectives while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The university also uses capstone projects where students work in teams to solve real-world problems by applying knowledge gained throughout their studies. In some programmes, students collaborate in small groups to design products or services addressing open-ended challenges.

A similar model could be introduced in Ghanaian universities by bringing together students from different faculties to solve practical problems. For instance, an accounting student could collaborate with an information technology student, a marketing student and an engineering student to identify a community challenge and develop a technology-driven business solution.
Such collaboration would help students understand that many modern problems cannot be solved through a single discipline. A financial challenge may require accounting knowledge, but also technology, data analysis, marketing and operational expertise.
For universities such as UPSA, which have a strong focus on business education, introducing structured innovation challenges could help transform student ideas into viable enterprises.
A possible model could involve universities announcing during student orientation that groups of students who develop strong business proposals and successfully defend their ideas before their third year would receive institutional support, including access to funding or entrepreneurship loans, to establish their businesses.
Over time, such a system could create a pipeline of graduate-owned businesses, with alumni building companies that address challenges in sectors such as finance, technology, agriculture, logistics and healthcare.

Moving beyond entrepreneurship, the approach could also improve workplace productivity by producing graduates who are more creative, adaptable and capable of improving existing organisations. Employers seek graduates who can think critically, collaborate across disciplines and apply knowledge to solve practical problems rather than simply possess academic qualifications.
Studies on problem-based learning and interdisciplinary education suggest that such approaches help students develop transferable skills, including teamwork, innovation and the ability to tackle complex challenges.
As Ghana continues to grapple with youth unemployment and the need for stronger local enterprises, universities may have to move beyond traditional classroom-based learning and make innovation, research and problem-solving central to the student experience.
The goal should not only be to prepare students for their first job after graduation but also to equip them with the mindset and capabilities to create opportunities, build sustainable businesses and contribute solutions to society’s evolving challenges.
