The United States Embassy in Ghana is bringing the 2026 FIFA World Cup experience directly to Ghanaian communities across all sixteen regions of the country, partnering with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to host watch parties that mirror the sixteen host cities spread across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Matthew Asada, Acting Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, announced the initiative, describing it as part of a broader American commitment to ensure the 2026 tournament becomes “the best tournament ever.”
The watch party programme is designed to draw a direct symbolic line between the sixteen host cities in North America and the sixteen regions of Ghana, bringing the spectacle of the World Cup into local communities and creating shared viewing experiences for Ghanaians who will be following the tournament from home.
The first watch party is scheduled for the National Stadium in Accra next Friday, coinciding with the United States’ opening match of the tournament.
Asada extended a direct invitation to the public to attend, with further events planned across the country’s regions throughout the competition.
Beyond the watch parties, Asada disclosed that the U.S. government has worked with Ghanaian authorities to expand visa availability and appointment access for fans travelling to the United States under the FIFA ticketing pass system.
Ghanaians holding FIFA passes, he confirmed, are now able to secure embassy interview appointments. This intervention addresses one of the more practical barriers facing supporters who wish to attend matches in the American host cities in person.
Asada framed the World Cup within a wider sporting horizon for the United States, noting that with the 2028 Olympic Games scheduled for Los Angeles, the country is entering what he described as “a decade of sports”, a sustained period of major international sporting events hosted on American soil that Ghana and the broader global community are being invited to participate in and celebrate.
The partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ghana Tourism Authority is a deliberate effort to ensure that the World Cup does not feel distant to Ghanaians simply because the stadiums are thousands of miles away.
In a country where football stirs genuine national passion, the watch party programme offers something simple and deeply felt: a place to gather, watch, and be part of something the whole world is sharing at the same time.
