Commercial transport operators have issued a one-week ultimatum to the government to fix the Pokuase–Nsawam road, warning of an indefinite sit-down strike if urgent repairs are not undertaken.
In a statement issued on August 14, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and allied transport groups described the stretch as “deplorable and dangerous” to motorists, commuters, and residents.
They cautioned that the poor state of the road has rendered it “nearly impassable,” driving up operational costs due to frequent vehicle maintenance, constant spare parts replacement, and reduced vehicle lifespans.
“We are grappling with high operational costs the situation has become a predicament not only for commercial transport operators but all motorists using the road,” the statement read.

The operators stressed that the problem extends beyond the transport industry, disrupting travel and economic activity for thousands moving between Accra and destinations in the Eastern, Ashanti, and northern regions.
They also expressed frustration over what they see as broken promises from the Ministry of Roads and Highways.
“In a recent engagement with the Minister for Roads and Highways, we were assured that the situation will be remedied in six (6) weeks but the timeline has elapsed while the situation remains the same to our chagrin,” the statement noted.
As part of their next steps, the transport unions are mobilising support from motorists, commuters, and residents along the route, urging them to join the planned protest as a civic duty to compel authorities to act.
