The Transport Operators Association of Ghana has announced a 15% increase in transport fares, effective Monday, July 22, 2024. This decision comes in response to the recent surge in petroleum and spare parts prices, as well as the prevailing economic hardships affecting the nation.
In a statement released on July 17, 2024, the Association noted that some oil marketing companies (OMCs) have already begun adjusting their prices at the pumps. Shell, one of the leading OMCs, has raised the price of a litre of petrol from GH¢14.80 to GH¢15.10, while a litre of diesel has increased from GH¢14.92 to GH¢15.25. Goil, another key player, is selling petrol and diesel at the same prices.
The Association explained that these price hikes, combined with the current economic difficulties, have significantly impacted the livelihoods of transport owners and drivers. “The prevailing economic difficulties and other factors are worsening the living condition of transport owners and drivers,” the statement read.
The Transport Operators Association is urging all Ghanaians to take note of the upcoming fare increment and to cooperate with transport operators during this period. The Association added that this decision aims to help mitigate the financial strain on transport operators, ensuring the continued provision of essential transport services across the country.
It is unclear, though, if the fare increase will be implemented as announced. Traditionally, such transport fare hikes are announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). However, in recent times, other groups within the transport sector have also championed fare increases.
