In response to recent fire outbreaks, traders at the Kasoa Timber Market have proactively installed surveillance cameras and acquired fire extinguishers to safeguard their merchandise. Speaking to The High Street Journal, they emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to protect their investments.
This initiative follows a series of devastating fires in various markets across the country. Notably, in September 2024, a fire at the Kasoa New Market destroyed numerous shops, causing traders to suffer great losses. The Ghana National Fire Service attributed the incident to non-compliance with safety protocols.
Similarly, in January 2025, over 130 stalls were destroyed in a fire at the Kwadaso Wood Market in the Ashanti Region. Victims appealed for support to rebuild their businesses, spotlighting the devastating impact of such incidents on traders’ livelihoods.
The traders at Kasoa Timber Market believe that the installation of surveillance cameras will deter potential arsonists and help monitor activities within the market. Additionally, having fire extinguishers readily available enables them to respond promptly to any fire emergencies, potentially minimizing damage.
Market leaders are also organizing training sessions for traders on fire safety and the effective use of fire extinguishers. They are collaborating with the Ghana National Fire Service to ensure that all safety measures meet the required standards, aiming to prevent future disasters.
