Elon Musk has been talking about Dojo for years—a supercomputer central to Tesla’s plans for AI. Dojo is crucial for Tesla’s goal of achieving full self-driving cars and unveiling a robotaxi, which is now set for October.
So, what is Dojo? It’s Tesla’s custom-built supercomputer designed to train the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) neural networks. This technology is already in about 2 million Tesla vehicles, which can handle some driving tasks but still need a human driver.
Tesla had to delay its robotaxi launch from August to October, but Musk’s commitment to autonomy remains strong. Tesla is investing heavily in AI and Dojo to reach this goal.
Musk wants Tesla to be more than just a car maker. He aims for it to lead in AI by mimicking human vision with its cars. Unlike other companies that use various sensors and maps for autonomous driving, Tesla relies solely on cameras and advanced neural networks.
The challenge however is that, training these neural networks requires massive computing power to process huge amounts of driving data. That’s where Dojo comes in. A supercomputer is made up of thousands of smaller computers, each handling different tasks. Dojo uses Tesla’s custom chips, known as D1, to efficiently train AI models.
Tesla’s D1 chips are designed to handle complex tasks quickly and efficiently. Each D1 chip is powerful, but Tesla is also developing a new chip, the D2, to improve performance further. For now, Tesla combines D1 chips into large tiles to create the Dojo supercomputer.

The supercomputer will help Tesla process vast amounts of data from its cars, improving FSD and possibly other AI projects like its humanoid robot, Optimus. Tesla hopes that by controlling its chip production, it can reduce reliance on expensive Nvidia chips and cut costs.
Musk has mentioned that Tesla is already using Nvidia hardware for some AI tasks but is investing in its own chips to handle future needs. Dojo’s progress is crucial for Tesla’s long-term plans, and the company expects it to be among the most powerful supercomputers soon.
