Lancaster University Ghana (LUG) has called on students to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics as critical skills for success in the modern digital economy.
Dr Emmanuel Arthur, the Provost and Chief Executive Officer, speaking at the university’s ninth graduation ceremony in Accra, said the institution was strengthening its focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education through practical programmes in robotics, innovation, and digital technologies.
He mentioned that the newly launched Emerging Technologies Centre had already provided robotics training to more than 60 high school students, exposing them to cutting-edge skills that will prepare them for future opportunities.
Dr Arthur also announced a fully funded scholarship for female STEM students, reaffirming the university’s commitment to increasing women’s participation in science and technology-related fields.
“AI and robotics are not just the future; they are shaping our present. Our task is to ensure that young people in Ghana are well-prepared to thrive in this global shift,” he said.
The Provost noted that LUG has also introduced a moot court facility to enhance its law programme and is preparing to launch an innovation and incubation hub to support budding entrepreneurs.
Dr Arthur added that the university’s growing emphasis on STEM education supports government’s vision to equip young people with innovation and digital skills needed to drive inclusive economic growth.
Since its establishment in 2013, LUG has produced over 700 graduates across various disciplines, many of whom are contributing to sectors such as telecommunications, education, banking and finance, and oil and gas.
The institution also offers exchange programmes and pathways for further studies in the UK, China, Malaysia, Germany, and Indonesia.
The graduation ceremony brought together students, parents, faculty, alumni, and industry leaders.
Outstanding students were recognised for excellence in academics, leadership, and community service, reflecting the university’s holistic approach to higher education.
