Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams pledged expanded welfare support and formal recognition for retired footballers after meeting representatives of the Retired Footballers Association of Ghana.
The delegation, led by association president James Kuuku Daszie, called on the minister to press for structured government support for former players who helped shape the country’s football legacy. The meeting at the ministry’s conference room included several retired internationals.
Adams acknowledged the contribution of past players to Ghana’s sporting history and outlined plans to improve post-retirement support systems. He cited ongoing efforts to establish a dedicated Sports Fund that would support not only active sports development but also the welfare of retired athletes, including health assistance and post-career opportunities.
He also announced plans to introduce annual commemorative events to honour former footballers. “The strength of a family is how well it is connected to the old,” Adams said, urging closer collaboration between the ministry and the association to develop sustainable programmes.
Daszie emphasised the need for stronger institutional ties to ensure retired players receive recognition and support. He referenced Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations victories in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982 as milestones that cemented the country’s status as a continental football power.
Chief Director of the ministry Wilhelmina Asamoah welcomed the delegation and expressed optimism about future collaboration.Among those present were former national team players including Mohammed Polo, Abdul Razak and George Alhassan.
