Zenith Bank has called on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana to adopt structured fuel payment systems as part of efforts to address operational inefficiencies and strengthen business growth.
Mr. Kwame Adadey, Divisional Head for SME Retail and Digital Banking at Zenith Bank, stressed that while large logistics companies have long benefited from advanced fleet management systems, smaller businesses continue to struggle with manual and cash-based methods.
Speaking at the launch of the bank’s new Visa Commercial Fleet Solutions, he said SMEs often face heightened risks of fraud, poor accountability, and lack of reliable data when handling fuel and fleet expenses in cash.
“Even businesses with just three or four vehicles, which they consider their fleet, find it hard to manage fuel payments effectively. There’s a lot of fraud and inefficiency when it comes to moving cash around,” Mr. Adadey noted.
The newly introduced fleet solution digitises fleet and fuel management, allowing companies to use Fleet Cards linked to a comprehensive Fleet Management System.
The platform provides real-time tracking, detailed reporting, and greater visibility over fuel and vehicle-related spending.
Mr. Adadey explained that the system empowers SMEs to make informed decisions, including identifying vehicles that are financially draining their operations. “It allows them to manage drivers and cash more effectively while providing a clear overview of expenditure,” he said.
SMEs form the backbone of Ghana’s economy but face persistent barriers such as limited access to finance, markets, and modern technology. Fuel management, often overlooked, has emerged as one of the critical hurdles limiting efficiency and profitability.
Commenting on the partnership, Mr. Fabrice Konan, Country Manager for Visa Ghana, said the solution was designed to equip drivers with secure, card-based payment options while giving business owners complete oversight.
“This collaboration with Zenith Bank underscores our commitment to providing innovative payment solutions that enhance transparency and efficiency for businesses in Ghana,” he said.
Zenith Bank believes that embracing fuel payment plans will not only cut fraud and reduce inefficiencies but also unlock critical data that SMEs can use to improve productivity, lower costs, and compete more effectively.
