The Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in Ghana are advocating for alternative fuel sources as the Ghana National Gas Limited (Ghana Gas) announces a critical shutdown of its Gas Processing Plant and offshore gas export facilities.
This maintenance, scheduled from August 1 to August 17, is designed to enhance the plant’s operational efficiency and ensure a reliable gas supply in the future.
Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Independent Power Producers, has expressed concerns about the potential impact on power production due to the anticipated fuel shortage.
He has called on the government and sector managers to provide an alternative fuel supply optimized for effective output during this period. While acknowledging the necessity of the maintenance, Dr. Apetorgbor also stressed the need for thorough planning to minimize disruptions to the electricity supply.
Ghana Gas, the entity responsible for the shutdown, has highlighted that the maintenance is crucial for ensuring the safety and efficiency of its operations. During this period, inspections and upgrades will be conducted to address potential issues and improve performance. The company has assured stakeholders that it is working closely with partners to mitigate any adverse effects on the energy sector and the public.
Despite the planned lean gas supply from the Sankofa OCTP to the Takoradi Distribution Station, Ghana Gas has committed to completing the maintenance on schedule to minimize impact. The company apologizes for any inconvenience caused, emphasizing that these efforts are essential for maintaining a safe and reliable gas supply.
