Ghana’s banking industry is in mourning following the tragic military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, that claimed eight lives, including two Cabinet Ministers. The incident has shaken the nation and prompted an outpouring of grief across public and private institutions.
In a solemn statement issued by the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB), the sector expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the government, affected institutions, and bereaved families.
“The Ghanaian banking industry stands with the nation in mourning the tragic loss of distinguished public servants and professionals,” the Association stated.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, the Government of Ghana, and all institutions affected by this national tragedy. May their souls rest in perfect peace.”
Among the victims were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Minister for Defence, and Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment.
Their passing marks a profound loss not only to the political establishment but to the economic sectors they frequently engaged with. Both men had been instrumental in facilitating public-private dialogues, especially in areas like defence financing, climate financing, green energy partnerships, and sustainable infrastructure matters with direct bearing on long-term banking and investment strategy in Ghana.
The tragedy has led to the postponement of several national and industry events, including finance-related conferences and government-business roundtables. Across the country, flags flew at half-mast as institutions observed moments of silence in honour of the deceased.
Industry leaders say the moment calls for collective reflection on national service and resilience.
