The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr. Sam Nartey George, has announced a new initiative to ensure digital inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Ghana.
The Minister highlighted the persistent digital divide that excludes many PWDs from fully participating in today’s technology-driven society.
He stressed that both global and local digitalisation efforts often overlook the needs of individuals with impairments, especially in areas such as communication.
Mr. George used the occasion to unveil the government’s “One Million Coders” initiative, announcing that at least 10% of beneficiaries will be Persons with Disabilities.
He further revealed plans to establish regional digital centres and Zonal ICT Innovation Hubs to provide structured training tailored to vulnerable groups, especially PWDs and women.
“As we roll out new technologies, we must ensure that innovation becomes a tool for inclusion, not inequality,” the Minister emphasized.
He also called on the tech industry to prioritize accessibility, stating that AI must become a force for empowerment, not exclusion.
“The tools developed today,” he said, “may one day give a child with cerebral palsy the power to communicate with classmates in Nzema, or help a stroke survivor speak again with dignity in Ghana.”
