The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology & Innovations, Sam George has dismissed circulating claims that MTNGhana and MTNNG have commenced cross-border payments, assuring the fintech community that no such licences have been issued.
The minister in a post on his X social media page made it known that he had received several “frantic calls” from industry players concerned about the alleged development.
“Despite our commitment to a seamless and inclusive financial ecosystem, there are regulations for the industry,” the minister stated. “My checks with the bank of ghana indicate that no such licence has been issued for cross-border payments.” He cited that regulatory compliance remains a priority in Ghana’s rapidly evolving digital financial sector.
The minister also reassured stakeholders that the government is dedicated to working closely with all relevant parties. “We would work with all stakeholders as the Ministry for Digital Technology to ensure a favourable ecosystem that protects investments, supports innovation and offers the best products to our citizens,” he added.
