Police officers at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa checkpoint in the Volta Region have intercepted large ammunition concealed in a passenger bus during a routine inspection in the early hours of Friday, April 18, 2025.
The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. when officers stopped a Hyundai bus with registration number GR 8246-Q en route from Accra to Benin.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 60 cartons of AAA cartridges containing 15,000 rounds, along with 72 cartons of BB cartridges totalling 18,000 rounds.
The ammunition were hidden in sacks and stashed beneath passenger luggage in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
The driver, 45-year-old Abasou Fousseni, and his co-driver, Salisu Jalilu, 38, were immediately taken into custody for questioning.
While both initially denied knowledge of the concealed cargo, subsequent police intelligence identified the co-driver as the individual responsible for loading the ammunition onto the bus prior to departure.
Following preliminary investigations, the driver was granted police enquiry bail to continue the journey with the remaining passengers. However, the co-driver remains in custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
In a statement signed by DSP Felix Danku of the Public Affairs Unit, the Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to combating cross-border crime and safeguarding public safety.
The Service also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, emphasizing its dedication to maintaining peace and stability across the Volta Region and the nation’s borders.
