The OPEC Fund for International Development awarded $800,000 to three organizations working in renewable energy, food security and climate resilience during its 2026 Development Forum, as the institution marked its 50th anniversary with a renewed focus on innovation-led development.
The awards, presented under the OPEC Fund’s revamped Annual Award for Development program, recognized projects supporting women-led enterprises in the Sahel, digital agricultural services in Bangladesh and solar-powered cold storage solutions for farmers.
OPEC Fund President Abdulhamid Alkhalifa said the winners demonstrated how locally driven innovation could help address some of the most pressing development challenges facing emerging economies.
“Development progress depends not only on finance, but on people with the vision and determination to turn ideas into practical solutions,” Alkhalifa said during the awards ceremony held alongside the OPEC Fund Development Forum in Vienna.
The award program, first launched in 2006, was redesigned this year to align more closely with the institution’s strategic priorities. The updated framework recognizes achievements across three categories: transformational impact, innovation and youth entrepreneurship.
Fundación Plan International España received the Transformational Impact Award, valued at $450,000, for its DESFERS initiative in the Sahel region. The program supports women through renewable energy access, vocational training and financing opportunities aimed at expanding women-led businesses and improving economic inclusion.
The Innovation for Development Award, carrying a $250,000 prize, went to Bangladesh-based iFarmer Limited, an agricultural technology platform connecting smallholder farmers to financing, farm inputs, advisory services, weather information and markets.
According to the OPEC Fund, iFarmer has supported more than 300,000 farmers and facilitated the movement of hundreds of thousands of tons of agricultural produce to markets, highlighting the growing role of digital platforms in strengthening food systems and rural incomes.
The Youth Entrepreneurship Award, valued at $100,000, was presented to AkoFresh, a company providing solar-powered cold storage facilities, refrigerated transport and farmer support services aimed at reducing post-harvest losses.
The initiative seeks to improve food security and farmer incomes while addressing climate-related vulnerabilities in agricultural supply chains.
The winners were selected by an independent committee comprising former Grameen Foundation Chief Executive Officer Zubaida Bai, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Director General Simeon Ehui and Envisioning founder Michell Zappa.
The committee evaluated submissions based on impact, innovation, sustainability and scalability potential, according to the OPEC Fund.
The awards ceremony formed part of the broader OPEC Fund Development Forum, which brought together government officials, development finance institutions, private-sector executives and civil society organizations to discuss financing solutions for developing economies.
