Omaya Care won the inaugural Ghana AI Innovation Challenge after developing an artificial intelligence platform aimed at detecting potentially life-threatening postpartum complications among mothers after hospital discharge.
The team received a first prize of GH¢25,000 at the Ghana AI Summit & Awards 2026, where it was selected from more than 100 applications featuring AI solutions built on Ghanaian datasets.
Omaya Care’s platform uses artificial intelligence and voice technology to assess mothers through ordinary phone calls, identify potential warning signs and alert healthcare providers when urgent intervention may be required.
The system is designed to address gaps in postpartum follow-up care, particularly in communities where access to healthcare services, smartphones and mobile data may be limited.
Unlike platforms that depend on smartphone applications, Omaya Care operates through basic mobile networks and WhatsApp, allowing mothers to access the service without requiring a smartphone or mobile internet connection.
The developers said the approach could expand access to AI-enabled maternal health support and improve the early detection of complications in underserved communities.
The challenge, organised as part of the Ghana AI Summit & Awards in partnership with the Ghana AI Research Network and Meta, shortlisted 12 teams from more than 100 applicants across sectors including healthcare, agriculture, financial inclusion, public services and communications.
Husker AI and SignLink received Certificates of Commendation for their AI solutions.
Professor Isaac Wiafe, a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Ghana and one of the judges, said: “The Ghana AI Challenge shows that our young developers and innovators are not merely observing the digital revolution, they are actively shaping it with Ghanaian based solutions designed for Ghana’s unique needs and values.”
The judging panel included Emmanuel Ofori, Director at the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations; Juliet Amoah, Country Director of Emerging Public Leaders; Sulayman Usman, Global Practice Architect at Google Data Cloud; Professor Delali Dake, Associate Professor of Computing and Information Technology at the University of Education, Winneba; and Abraham Odoi, CTO of Npontu Technologies.
The Ghana AI Summit & Awards 2026 was organised by Knowledge Innovations.
