The National Identification Authority (NIA) has begun the free issuance of backlog Ghana Cards across all its district offices in the Greater Accra Region, starting today, Monday, April 7, 2025.
This exercise targets applicants who registered for the Ghana Card, whether for first-time issuance, replacement, or updates, between June 2023 and now but have not yet received their cards. The NIA says those affected can now visit the district offices where they originally registered to collect their printed cards.
In addition to clearing the backlog, the NIA is also opening its doors to Ghanaians aged 15 and above who have never registered for the Ghana Card. First-time registration is also free of charge and will be conducted at all district offices within the region.
“The NIA emphasizes that the issuance of the printed backlog of Ghana Cards and first-time issuance (new registration) at all NIA District Offices are free of charge,” the Authority stated in a press release. “The public is urged to report any NIA staff who demand a fee in exchange for these services.”
However, the NIA clarified that services such as card replacement and update of personal information still attract a fee.
The Authority says it remains committed to ensuring that every eligible Ghanaian has access to the Ghana Card as a vital tool for national identification.
