MTN Ghana has stepped up its community-focused anti-fraud awareness campaign as part of its support for this year’s Homowo Festival, warning customers to remain vigilant against rising cases of mobile money scams.
Mrs. Jemima Kotei-Walsh, MTN’s Chief Customer Relations Officer, said the telecom giant is combining its goodwill donations to the La Traditional Council with a strong cybersecurity message.
The company has donated GH¢20,000, airtime, and assorted drinks to support the celebrations, while also using the festivities as a platform to educate the public about mobile money fraud.
“We are engaging the community directly, educating them on how to protect themselves against fraudsters,” Mrs. Kotei-Walsh explained.
“We want customers to be aware, safeguard their phones and wallets, and report suspicious activity immediately. Our yellow banners will be visible across festival grounds, and we encourage everyone to approach us with their concerns,” she added.
She said fraudulent mobile money transactions have become a growing threat in Ghana’s digital financial space, with scammers exploiting unsuspecting users through fake promotions, phishing messages, and social engineering tactics.
MTN, which commands the largest share of Ghana’s mobile money market, has faced persistent challenges in curbing fraud despite introducing security measures such as MoMo ID verification codes and enhanced SIM registration protocols.
Speaking on behalf of the La Traditional Council, Nii Adjei Koofe IV, La Shikitele, praised MTN for its consistent support and urged the telco to strengthen its systems further.
“MTN must ensure that no one can override security protocols. At the same time, subscribers should be educated to understand the risks of fraud so that they don’t fall victim,” he said.
The chief encouraged festival-goers and MTN customers to avail themselves for the awareness sessions. “Our people must open up, ask questions, and share their challenges. This way, MTN can help resolve issues and guide them on safe usage of their services.”
MTN has committed to continue its nationwide fraud education drive, with staff on the ground to support customers with service requests, offer advice on mobile money safety, and address other digital concerns.
The telco says building cyber resilience among its users is now a priority, especially during mass gatherings like festivals, where fraudsters often attempt to take advantage of unsuspecting customers.
