MTN Ghana has launched a celebration to mark the 15th anniversary of its Mobile Money (MoMo) service, reflecting on the milestones achieved since its introduction.
The event, held in Takoradi, was themed “Empowering Communities – Celebrating 15 Years of Progressive Financial and Digital Inclusion.”
Momo has transformed the transaction methods of Ghanaians, enabling them to do business and personal transactions with ease, the service has provided its users “a stay” home transaction capabilities.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Solomon Hayford, Head of Business Intelligence and Decision Support at Mobile Money Limited, made mention of the vision that inspired the creation of MoMo. The service was designed to expand access to financial services across Ghana, leveraging technology to build a more inclusive financial ecosystem.
“When we began this journey 15 years ago, Ghana’s financial landscape was vastly different. A significant portion of the population, especially those in rural and underserved areas, had limited access to traditional banking services. This made basic financial transactions challenging, which in turn hindered economic growth and personal empowerment,” Mr. Hayford explained.
“We saw this gap and took on the challenge to make a meaningful difference by bringing financial services to the fingertips of every Ghanaian through mobile technology,” he added.
Over the past 15 years, MoMo has played a critical role in driving economic growth in Ghana, empowering individuals, transforming businesses, and strengthening communities.
However, Mr. Hayford acknowledged that challenges persist, particularly with MoMo fraud, which continues to undermine efforts to promote digital and financial inclusion.
“MoMo fraud is a serious issue that we at Mobile Money Limited are deeply committed to addressing. We will continue to collaborate with stakeholders through awareness campaigns and invest in robust security measures to protect our customers,” he stated.
He also urged customers to remain vigilant against fraudsters, advising them to safeguard their PINs and avoid engaging with unsolicited links, fake SMS messages, or instructions from unknown callers.
Mr. Hayford expressed gratitude to MTN’s partners, including regulatory bodies, financial institutions, technology and channel partners, agents, and merchants, for their crucial roles in creating an environment that has allowed MoMo to thrive.
To commemorate the 15th anniversary, MTN Ghana has planned a series of activities, including market launches, floats in major cities, a MoMo fraud awareness campaign, and skills training for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The celebrations will also feature an awards night to recognize stakeholders’ contributions, the launch of new services, and a customer promotion.
