The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) wrapped up the week ending March 28, 2025, with a mix of gains and losses, as MTN Ghana (MTNGH) and the NewGold ETF (GLD) stole the spotlight. While trading volumes surged on some days, key indices struggled to maintain momentum, ending the week slightly lower than their midweek peak.
The GSE Composite Index started strong on Monday at 6,126.08 and climbed steadily to 6,230.22 on Thursday, before dipping to 6,217.90 on Friday. The market capitalization followed a similar trend, peaking at GH¢137.14 billion, only to settle at GH¢136.99 billion by week’s end.
Monday saw a trading frenzy, with over 5.7 million shares changing hands, largely fueled by MTNGH, which alone accounted for 5.5 million shares valued at GH¢17.2 million. Despite the high activity, the stock barely moved, with only minor price changes throughout the week.
GLD, the gold-backed exchange-traded fund, had a rollercoaster week. On Monday, it recorded the highest single-day trade value of GH¢30.5 million, even though fewer than 70,000 shares were exchanged. It initially suffered a -2.21 price drop, but by Friday, it had rebounded strongly with another GH¢7.9 million trade, closing with a 3.01-point gain.
Banking stocks also saw some action, with GCB Bank and Access Bank gaining investor interest. Access Bank recorded a 0.25 price increase on Wednesday, while GCB Bank remained largely stable. CAL Bank and other financial stocks saw minor fluctuations, contributing to a gradual rise in the Financial Stock Index, which ended the week at 3,059.30.
In terms of weekly gainers and losers, GLD emerged as the biggest winner, rising by 3.01 points on Friday after its earlier dip. SIC Insurance also saw a 3.10-point increase on Thursday, making it one of the strongest performers. MTN Ghana managed to pick up 0.14 points on Wednesday.
On the losing side, GLD’s early-week dip of -2.21 points made it one of the worst performers before its recovery. CAL Bank slipped slightly, losing 0.03 points on Friday, while MTNGH saw a small -0.01 decline on Friday despite its high trading volume.
