MTN Group has pushed back against criticism that its recent leadership changes were not adequately explained to stakeholders, insisting that the rationale was clearly communicated across multiple channels following its interim results announcement on August 18.
The company was responding to a Business Day editorial that suggested a lack of disclosure around the board and executive shifts. MTN said the changes stemmed from a Group Board strategic review and are aimed at strengthening execution and delivery over the next three to five years, beyond its current 2025 strategy horizon.
“The same team that has been executing is still the same team that we’ve appointed to take the strategy forward. Some people have been moved around in terms of different roles, but the aim is still to create value as we look three to five years out,” Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita said during the results presentation.
MTN underscored that it had published a separate Stock Exchange News Service (SENS) announcement titled “Group strategic review and operating model changes to support execution / Changes to the board of MTN South Africa” in addition to its H1 financial results. The group said the announcement, along with media briefings, investor calls, employee engagements, and internal communications, formed part of a comprehensive disclosure effort.
The operator also pointed to its new Y’ello Chair podcast, produced with Business Day, which unpacked the leadership shifts and was made available on its corporate website.
MTN’s leadership is currently meeting investors on its half-year results roadshow, having concluded engagements in South Africa and preparing for meetings in the UK and US. The group said discussions with major shareholders have reinforced that the changes are deliberate, strategic, and aligned with medium-term objectives.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to “transparent, accurate, and timely communication with all stakeholders in line with regulatory requirements and best practice,” adding that it remains open to further engagements through its press office and investor relations team.
