MTN Group, Africa’s largest telecommunications service provider, has announced a strategic partnership with Meta aimed at improving the quality and reliability of voice and video calls over real-time calling applications such as WhatsApp. The partnership will cover 12 of MTN’s markets.
The collaboration focuses on optimising the relationship between mobile networks and real-time calling applications. By improving application-aware networks and ensuring network-aware applications, both companies aim to offer users a more seamless, stable, and high-quality experience.
Since the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, dedicated teams from MTN and Meta have worked together to identify key areas for network enhancement. Using data analytics and extensive testing, they have developed solutions that improve how mobile networks manage real-time call traffic while maintaining efficiency in overall traffic delivery.
Nigeria became the first MTN market to implement these enhancements. The rollout delivered a 50% improvement in key performance indicators (KPIs), resulting in a noticeably better user experience for MTN Nigeria customers.
“This implementation further demonstrates our commitment to enhancing our customers’ digital experience. We’re pleased with the remarkable improvement in our real-time communication services, reflecting our commitment to innovative customer solutions,” said Yahaya Ibrahim, Chief Technology Officer at MTN Nigeria.
Diego Marí, Head of Network Ecosystems Engineering at Meta, noted: “The collaboration allows us to deploy advanced solutions for an unparalleled real-time experience in Nigeria and showcases our dedication to elevating service quality and improving user experience, while striving for continued efficiency in traffic delivery.”
MTN and Meta plan to replicate these enhancements across the remaining 11 markets over the coming months, reinforcing their shared goal of delivering superior digital experiences to users across Africa.
