Ghana’s drive towards cleaner energy and stronger LPG adoption has received a major boost with the arrival of MT Asharami Ghana, a 40,000-cubic-metre Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) carrier that delivered 5,000 metric tonnes of LPG to the country on its maiden voyage.
The vessel forms part of Sahara Group’s integrated LPG infrastructure strategy aimed at strengthening supply reliability, enhancing energy security and supporting Ghana’s ambition to increase LPG adoption from approximately 30 per cent of households today to 50 per cent by 2030.

Welcoming the vessel, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, described the development as a significant step towards expanding access to cleaner energy solutions.
“The arrival of MT Asharami Ghana represents a significant step forward in our quest to expand access to cleaner energy solutions for Ghanaians. As we work towards increasing LPG adoption across the country, investments like this are essential to strengthening supply reliability and achieving our clean cooking objectives.”
The Minister noted that achieving Ghana’s energy transition goals would require close collaboration between government and the private sector.
“Government cannot achieve this vision alone. We commend Sahara Group for standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Ghana over the years in supporting our aspirations for energy security, economic growth and sustainable development.”
According to Wale Ajibade, Executive Director, Sahara Group, the vessel’s arrival represents a commitment to cleaner energy, improved livelihoods and sustainable growth.
“This maiden voyage to Ghanaian shores signals a resounding welcome to greater access to cleaner energy, healthier homes and communities, thriving businesses and a more sustainable environment.”
Ajibade said investments in LPG infrastructure remain critical to meeting Ghana’s growing demand for cleaner cooking fuel.
“Carrying 5,000 metric tonnes of LPG, MT Asharami Ghana embarks on the first of many voyages that will strengthen energy security, expand access to cleaner fuel alternatives and support Ghana’s growing energy aspirations.”
Yaa Serwaa Alifo, Managing Director, Asharami Ghana, said the vessel’s arrival marked an important milestone in the country’s energy journey.
“What we are celebrating here is the culmination of a vision and a bold statement of our commitment to Ghana’s energy future. Asharami Ghana will help ensure that homes, businesses and families across Ghana have reliable access to cleaner cooking fuel.”
