Mobile Money Fintech Limited (MoMo), in partnership with the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), has launched the Ride with MoMo campaign to encourage commercial drivers to adopt digital payments, improve record-keeping and strengthen financial inclusion.
The campaign, which uses the GhQR platform, was launched in Accra before moving to Ho in the Volta Region as part of efforts to reduce cash-based transactions and promote safer, traceable and more formal payment systems in the transport sector.
A statement issued by MobileMoney Fintech Limited and signed by Mr Paapa Osei, Head of Legal and Reputation Management, said the initiative brought together ride-hailing drivers, transport unions, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the National Communications Authority (NCA), financial institutions and other stakeholders.
The campaign seeks to promote the use of the MoMo Merchant Wallet and GhQR as practical digital payment solutions for commercial transport operators.
Mr Shaibu Haruna, Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech Limited, said the initiative addressed challenges associated with cash handling while helping drivers build more organised businesses.
He said digital payments would enable drivers to separate personal and business finances, maintain proper transaction records and establish a financial history that could improve their access to future financial services.
The campaign is expected to onboard ride-hailing, haulage and Pragya drivers onto the MoMo Merchant network, allowing passengers to pay fares by scanning a GhQR code with the MoMo App or any GhQR-enabled application.
Mr Haruna said the system would ensure drivers received the exact fare instantly, reducing the risks associated with carrying cash, eliminating disputes over change and making transactions more convenient for both drivers and passengers.
Madam Akosua Blay, Chief Business Officer of GhIPSS, said the initiative demonstrated the importance of partnerships in expanding Ghana’s digital payment ecosystem.
She said GhQR enabled drivers to receive payments through a single QR code from bank accounts, mobile money wallets and fintech wallets, making digital payments more practical and accessible for small businesses.
Madam Blay said the collaboration with MobileMoney Fintech Limited would help bring more informal businesses into the formal financial system while supporting Ghana’s drive towards a more inclusive digital economy.
Representatives of commercial drivers welcomed the initiative, describing it as a safer and more efficient way of receiving payments.
A representative of ride-hailing drivers in Accra said digital payments would reduce cash handling, minimise disputes over change and improve record-keeping.
Similarly, a representative of Pragya riders in Ho said the platform would help drivers serve the growing number of passengers who preferred cashless payments while enabling operators to keep better track of their businesses.
The Ride with MoMo campaign forms part of MobileMoney Fintech Limited’s broader efforts to promote financial inclusion, improve the safety of transport payments and support the formalisation of commercial transport businesses.
