The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has initiated a $40 million Food Systems Resilience Programme to assist farmers impacted by the Akosombo and Kpong dam spillages. This initiative, funded by the World Bank, aims to aid farmers along the Volta and Eastern stretches of the Akosombo Dam, whose lands were damaged by actions taken by the Volta River Authority (VRA).
On July 15, 2024, MoFA began distributing essential supplies, including seeds and fertilizers, to over 3,624 farmers in the North Tongu District. These supplies are critical for enhancing crop production, farm productivity, and farmer incomes.
The support plan for the affected farmers was first announced at a Presidential Conference on Youth in Agriculture in Accra on October 18, 2023. President Nana Akufo-Addo stated that MoFA would establish a long-term relief programme for farmers in the Volta Region affected by floods.
Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Minister of Food and Agriculture, said, the government has taken steps to fully restore farmers along the Volta and Eastern stretch of the Akosombo Dam, whose farms were wiped out due to the VRA’s spillage actions last year. He emphasised, “Ensuring the availability, affordability, and quality of farm inputs is vital for promoting agricultural prosperity and inclusive rural development. This initiative aims to support smallholder farmers in Ghana and contribute to the overall growth and resilience of the nation’s food systems.”
