A delegation from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has held talks with the Trade Ministry to advance plans for a circular textile industry, including feasibility work on a closed-loop recycling facility and targeted support for small businesses.
The discussions with the Garment and Textiles Unit of the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry centered on restructuring Ghana’s textile value chain around circular economy principles, officials said after the meeting in Accra.
Key proposals include promoting circular production models, providing small and medium-sized enterprises with access to technical equipment and specialized training, and conducting studies toward establishing a domestic textile recycling plant. The aim is to reduce waste, lower reliance on imported inputs and create new industrial uses for discarded fabrics.
Participants also examined ways to strengthen local research institutions and expand collaboration with Italian partners to accelerate technology transfer and attract investment into sustainable manufacturing. The engagement identified Italian and broader European technologies that could be introduced through structured business missions and investment promotion initiatives.
The partnership is expected to build technical capacity within Ghana’s textile industry while positioning local firms to tap into global expertise in sustainable production methods. According to officials, transforming textile waste into industrial inputs could unlock new revenue streams and support job creation across the value chain.
The initiative forms part of Ghana’s wider industrial transformation drive, which seeks to build resilient, environmentally sustainable manufacturing sectors and expand opportunities for local enterprises.
