The Mental Health Authority (MHA) of Ghana has launched a fundraising initiative through a mobile short code, *725*6225#, in a groundbreaking effort to address the nation’s mental health challenges.
The launch took place during the World Mental Health Day celebration at the Greater Accra Coordinating Council.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, Prof. Pinaman Appau, led the launch alongside Madam Estelle Appiah, Chairperson of the Mental Health Authority Board. They appealed to the general public and corporate institutions to contribute generously to support mental health initiatives nationwide.
Additionally, the Authority emphasized the availability of a toll-free number, 0800678678, for individuals seeking mental health support.
According to Prof. Appau, this initiative is essential in extending help to those in need, especially in underserved communities. It is part of the broader strategy to improve mental health awareness and services across Ghana.

The launch comes at a time when mental health issues are gaining attention globally, yet in the country, the sector remains underfunded.
The shortcode initiative aims to mobilize much-needed resources from the public to bridge funding gaps and enhance the reach of mental health services.
The Chairperson of the Mental Health Authority Board, Madam Estelle Appiah, said every donation, regardless of size, will contribute to strengthening the mental health infrastructure, from treatment centers to awareness campaigns.
The Mental Health Authority’s efforts are expected to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health conditions. With increased funding, they hope to expand access to essential services, especially for vulnerable populations who often lack the means to seek proper care.
Meanwhile, Prof. Appau stressed the need for collective responsibility, stating that mental health is a national priority that requires the commitment of every Ghanaian.
As part of the celebration, several stakeholders, including health professionals and mental health advocates, discussed the need for sustainable funding and innovative solutions to tackle mental health challenges in the country. The launch of the shortcode was hailed as a step in the right direction, providing an easy and direct way for Ghanaians to contribute to this critical cause.
The Mental Health Authority is optimistic that with the support of the public and corporate entities, they will be able to reach more individuals in need of mental health services.
