Kotoka International Airport (KIA) has hosted the “Girls in Aviation Day” celebration, aimed at encouraging young women to explore careers in the aviation industry.
Led by the Ghana Chapter of Women in Aviation International, the event brought together over 200 students to engage in hands-on activities, mentorship, and career insights, focusing on bridging the gender gap in the field.
The Deputy Commissioner of the Ghana Immigration Service and Regional Commander at KIA, Mrs. Edith Penelope Arhin, in her keynote speaking at the ceremony, in Accra, emphasized its significance. “Today, we recognize not only the progress women have made in aviation but also the dreams and aspirations of the next generation,” she said.
Participants engaged in activities such as flight simulations, career workshops, and guided airport tours, where they explored roles like piloting, air traffic control, and aircraft maintenance. Female professionals from Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the Civil Aviation Authority shared their experiences, underscoring the importance of education, perseverance, and passion.
The aviation sector, traditionally male-dominated, is making efforts toward gender parity through such initiatives. The Ghana Chapter of Women in Aviation International believes that exposing young girls to aviation early can spark lifelong interest and inspire future careers.
The event also highlighted the need for sustained support, with calls for scholarships and training programs from local institutions and aviation companies to ensure that financial barriers do not deter interested girls.
Students from Tema Methodist Day Senior High School, Corpus Christi Senior High School, Our Lady of Mercy Senior High School, and African Science Academy were among those sponsored to attend the event.
