President John Dramani Mahama has announced a national support fund to provide long-term education, health care and welfare for the children of the eight killed in the August 6 helicopter crash in Adansi Akrufuom, Ashanti Region.
The fund, which begins with an initial GH₵500,000 deposit from Stanbic Bank and a government seed contribution, will finance schooling, cover medical insurance and specialised care, and provide basic living support to the children of all eight victims.
The President said the initiative is intended to ensure the victims’ children “will not be alone” and will be sustained through public and private contributions, with a formal framework to be published within 30 days.
“The Fund for the children of the victims of the August 6, as it has officially been named, will cover education from primary through to university or technical training, healthcare including medical insurance, specialised care where required, and welfare support, clothing, shelter, and essential living expenses,” the President noted.
The victims, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, were en route to Obuasi to launch an anti-illegal mining initiative when the crash occurred.
