President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled The Black Star Experience, a landmark initiative aimed at positioning Ghana as the premier gateway to Africa for the global diaspora. This ambitious program, which integrates culture, tourism, and creative arts, is expected to generate widespread economic benefits across multiple sectors, driving job creation, investment, and cultural exchange.
Speaking in Parliament, President Mahama stressed that tourism and creative arts remain vital pillars of Ghana’s development strategy. He noted that The Black Star Experience will feature carefully curated cultural, historical, and artistic events in collaboration with the private sector, diplomatic missions, ministries, departments, and agencies.
“Our aim is to position The Black Star Experience as a uniquely Ghanaian tourism brand,” the president stated. “The initiative will incorporate the Pan-African Month celebrations and showcase activities such as street carnivals, film week, a fashion festival, a food fair, theatrical and drama performances, concert party competitions, and monthly domestic tourism destinations.”
Broad Economic Impact of Black Star Experience
Beyond tourism, the initiative is expected to provide ripple effects across various industries. The hospitality sector stands to gain significantly, with increased demand for hotels, restaurants, and transportation services. The fashion industry will benefit from expanded markets for local designers and artisans, while the food and beverage sector will see a surge in patronage for traditional Ghanaian cuisine.

The film and entertainment industries are also poised for growth, as the initiative will create new platforms for Ghanaian filmmakers, musicians, and performers to reach both local and international audiences. Meanwhile, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are set to capitalize on the increased foot traffic, with vendors and local businesses benefiting from expanded markets.
Additionally, the initiative includes a strategic focus on Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism to diversify Ghana’s tourism offerings. By attracting international business events, The Black Star Experience will enhance foreign direct investment and create new revenue streams for service providers in sectors such as logistics, event planning, and technology.
