Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) has resumed oil exploration in several offshore zones after more than five years of inactivity, in partnership with Italian energy firm Eni.
The state-owned company said the decision follows comprehensive technical and environmental assessments and will focus on offshore areas in northwestern Libya, where operations were previously suspended due to security and political instability.
Technical teams from Eni have already started seismic surveys and geological studies to prepare for drilling new exploratory wells. The NOC described the initiative as part of a broader strategy to boost output and make better use of the country’s hydrocarbon resources.
Eni, one of Libya’s largest foreign investors, co-manages several major projects with the NOC, including the Bahr Essalam natural gas field, one of North Africa’s biggest offshore developments.
Despite persistent political turmoil since the 2011 ouster of Muammar Gaddafi, Libya’s oil sector remains the cornerstone of its economy and the country’s primary source of revenue.
