Kotoka Airport: Terminal 2 to Become Multipurpose Facility to Ease Congestion

Ghana plans to convert Kotoka Airport’s Terminal 2 into a multipurpose facility linked to Terminal 3, easing congestion during peak hours and improving passenger comfort, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe says.

The Minister for Transport, Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, on Tuesday revealed plans to transform Terminal 2 of Kotoka International Airport into a multipurpose terminal, aimed at reducing congestion at Terminal 3.

Speaking before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) during a public hearing at Parliament House, Mr. Nikpe explained that the project would include a connecting concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3.

“This high-priority government initiative seeks to ease the pressure on Terminal 3, which often becomes overcrowded during peak hours, while Terminal 2 remains underused,” he said.

“Evenings at Terminal 3 are particularly congested. Terminal 2 is underutilized during these times, so our plan is to create a connecting concourse between the two terminals to facilitate smoother movement of international passengers and allow both terminals to share traffic,” Mr. Nikpe added.

The Transport Minister noted that the repurposing project is set for implementation in 2026. Once completed, Terminal 2 will serve both domestic and international travelers, improving comfort and travel efficiency at the airport.

“This project is a top government priority and will enhance the experience for our international passengers. Terminal 2 will now operate as a multipurpose terminal for both domestic and international flights,” he told PAC members.

The PAC is conducting the public hearing from Monday, January 12, to Tuesday, January 13, to review the Auditor-General’s reports on the public accounts of Ghana’s ministries, departments, and agencies for the year ending December 31, 2024.
