The Insurance Brokers Association of Ghana (IBAG) has advised policyholders affected by Monday’s flooding to prioritise their personal safety and follow the appropriate insurance claims procedures to facilitate compensation for their losses.
In a public advisory issued after the floods, the association expressed sympathy to individuals and families whose homes, businesses and vehicles may have been damaged by the heavy rains.
IBAG urged affected policyholders to ensure their safety before attempting to protect their property, warning against swimming or wading through floodwaters because of the risks involved.
The association also encouraged victims to document the damage by taking photographs or videos of affected properties where it is safe to do so, explaining that such evidence could support the processing of insurance claims.
It further advised policyholders not to dispose of damaged items until they have informed their insurance broker or insurer and an inspection has been conducted.
According to the advisory, policyholders should prepare a detailed inventory of damaged property after floodwaters have receded to assist insurers in assessing the extent of losses during the claims process.
IBAG also cautioned against carrying out reconstruction or repair works without first notifying insurers, except where immediate action is required to prevent further damage.
In such cases, the association advised policyholders to keep records of the work undertaken and provide estimated replacement or repair costs to their insurer.
The association further warned motorists against driving through flooded roads, noting that insurance claims for damaged vehicles could be rejected if investigations establish that the driver knowingly drove into floodwaters.
IBAG therefore urged motorists to exercise caution during periods of heavy rainfall and avoid flooded roads whenever possible.
The association encouraged policyholders who require assistance or clarification on the claims process to contact their insurance broker or the IBAG Secretariat for guidance.
The advisory comes after Monday’s floods affected several communities, causing damage to homes, businesses and vehicles, and highlighting the importance of insurance in helping individuals and businesses recover from natural disasters.
